I'm happy to say that a number of my paintings will be in a solo show titled "Light/Land/Water"! The paintings represent scenes derived from travels in Massachusetts and Maine, from Wellesley to islands off the coast of Maine. Most of the paintings are in oil, but a few are in pastel. More than a dozen new paintings will be included in an exhibition titled “Double Take” throughout May in the gallery at the Weston Public Library. Works in oil, pastel and watercolor will be on view. A number of years ago I became interested in what might happen if I were to paint more or less the same or a similar landscape view in different media. This idea gave me an exciting chance to explore how the medium itself would affect my choices in the execution of a painting, and also gave me tremendous motivation to get to know a landscape more deeply, more intimately. In this exhibition, a pastel might be “paired” with an oil, or a watercolor with an pastel; or in one instance, the same subject was done in oil, pastel and watercolor. Images in the show range from the snow-filled forests of Massachusetts and the lush marshes of Mt. Desert, to the fog-bound islands in Penobscot Bay.
A public reception will be held on Sunday, May 6, from 1-3 pm. I will give an illustrated lecture about my work on Saturday, May 19, from 2-3 pm. This is a much-anticipated annual juried exhibition, which is held in the spacious galleries of the Concord Art Association. I'm very pleased that my oil painting, "Northwest from Cadillac Mountain," was selected by the juror, Ali Rinenburg, Director of the Sloane Merrill Gallery in Boston.
